Hyde becomes Pulitzer finalist

Congratulations to Anne F. Hyde for becoming a Pulitzer finalist!

Her book, Empires, Nations & Families: A History of the North American West, 1800-1860, was named a finalist in the History category.

Earlier this year, she was awarded the 2012 Bancroft Prize, one of the most coveted awards in the field of history.

Empires, Nations, and Families shows how the world of river and maritime trade effectively shifted political power away from military and diplomatic circles into the hands of local people.

Armstrong wins Pulitzer

Congratulations to Ken Armstrong for winning a Pulitzer in investigative reporting!

Armstrong and Michael J. Berens of The Seattle Times won for their coverage of how a little known governmental body in Washington moved patients from safer pain-killers to a cheaper but more dangerous drug.

Armstrong is one of the authors of Scoreboard, Baby, where he goes behind the scenes of the Huskies’ Cinderella story to reveal a timeless morality tale.

Libby Sander of the Chronicle of Higher Education called Scoreboard, Baby a tale that "should be required reading for anyone linked to university life."

Baseball season is here

Happy Opening Day to baseball fans all across the country!

According to Shelf Awareness, UNP is doing its part by having more than 118 baseball titles in print. And David Davis of the New York Times said, “the pulse of baseball beats strongly in the heart of Cornhusker Nation.”

Lithuanian past and present

Author Ellen Cassedy's article “What Lithuania can teach us about dealing with the Holocaust” for Haaretz Daily Newspaper in Israel, discusses how Lithuania can provide a dialogue for helping people understand the Holocaust.

“The approach to the Jewish past thatI saw in Lithuania poses questions, rather than supplying answers,” Cassedy said. “Rather than being forced to repent, people are invited to design their own vehicles of remorse.” See full article here.

Cassedy’s new book, We Are Here, is a memoir of her personal journey discovering her Yiddish background and an exploration of the people of Lithuania.

In October, Cassedy will be going on a book tour in Lithuania, sponsored by the U.S Embassy.
