Or maybe that should be, "where's Ted's Valentines book?" or "Desperately Seeking Valentines". The popularity of Ted Kooser's collection of Valentine poems has depleted our own warehouse stock, so I decided to trek around Lincoln to see where you could still get copies.
What I refer to as the "O Street Barnes and Noble" hosted a book signing for Ted and the book's illustrator, Bob Hanna, last Saturday. That seemed like the perfect opportunity to get an idea of their stock as well as just be in Ted's presence, so my friend Amy, who is a self-proclaimed Ted fan, and her son Jack, set out in the family van to check it out. I counted about 20-30 event attendees, and they were selling books pretty quickly. My guess is there were still a few copies left after the event.
On Sunday, I did a quick drive-by count at the Southpointe Barnes and Noble. (Ok, I couldn't see the books from the car, but I got myself dropped off and picked back up in a minute so we didn't have to mess with Sunday afternoon mall parking.) They hosted a book signing for Ted the previous Saturday, and they still had about 50 autographed copies available. (and Godiva chocolates for sale on the same display table!)
As of Monday, Lee Booksellers had about 50 autographed copies as well. They offer free book rate shipping within the United States, for those of you not in Lincoln or maybe even for those of you snowbound in Lincoln.
The Nebraska Bookstore also had about a dozen copies available as of lunch time on Monday. For everyone outside of the Lincoln area, we encourage you to check out your local bookstores and conduct your own Valentines count. Let us know what you find.
